FancyCache causes several programs to produce errors

Post by FrozenLord »

Hi,

I started using FancyCache about 1 week ago and have tried several different settings (as well as the disk-version) since then.
Although the program speeds up my PC, it started to produce errors as well.

When I've been running my PC for several hours and used Sleep several times, FancyCache seems to produce errors.
One fault regards Outlook, which can no longer open browser links (some error about restrictions on the system) and fails to attach files to eMails / fails to open attachments.
Additionaly, some programs start to behave oddly.
For example, DropBox will no longer snychronize files that have just been added to a cached drive (it detects changed files and seemingly uploads them but the files will not be stored online).

All these problems stop after stopping caching for this drive.

I'm using these settings at the moment (running FancyCache 0.61 for Volumes):
- LRU (= least recently used) and Caching strategy = read/write
- Block Size = 16 KB
- Cache Size = 2048MB
- Caching the C: drive (cluster size 4 KB, 60 GB total, 17.x GB free, it's the only partition on this drive)
- Defer Write is active (120 seconds, everything else disabled)

The computer uses the following system:
- 8 GB Ram
- U7600 Core 2 Duo
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Is there anything else I can provide that would help in tracking down this bug?

Best Regards,
FrozenLord

Hi FrozenLord,

Thank you for your feedback.

Did the error occur if "Sleep" was disabled? I am wondering if the issue is related to the "Sleep"...

Hi,

I haven't been able to try this yet, because I use this PC for my studies and carry it with me all the time.
Therefore, the PC isn't running for more than 4 or 5 hours straight before it goes into Sleep-mode...

But I'll try to test this and give you feedback.
However, feel free to post other suggestions :)

Thank you. If possible, you can also try to disable Defer Write feature. Thus we can generally locate in which modules the issue is.

PS. In order to prevent data loss, I think you need to backup the system and important data if you continue to test. I am afraid that the errors might cause data corruptions.

For some reason, this problem has not occured again...
I'm currently running with the settings you can find in the attached screenshot.
The system runs stable and doesn't malfunction anymore (while performing better than w/o FancyCache).

Was there anything changed? or because of no "sleep"?

I did use sleep - but without problems.
However, I activated "Release after Write" and "Averaging Write Amount".
Additionally, I increased the block size to 64 KB (from 16 KB).
Unfortunately, I don't have any debug tools to know exactly, what these options do and whether they might in fact be connected to the problem (or to identify what caused the problem the first time).
