Write cache with Windows RAID-1 (mirror)

Post by edv »

If I have a software RAID-1 in place (using 2008R2), I see both physical drives in the "New Cache Task" window. If I select both halves of the mirror, everything appears to work properly, but I am wondering if this is the correct usage of the PrimoCache product in this circumstance. If I write 10 GB of data to the mirror, will PrimoCache understand this as needing to take up only 10 GB of space in the write cache, or will it see the split writes as 20 GB total -- 10 to each of the physical disk ?

I also have an Intel RAID-1 volume on the same machine, and it shows up as only one physical drive in the "New Cache Task" window.

I just did a quick test with the software RAID-1 and copied 3 GB of files with a "write-only" PrimoCache set at 10 GB, and the Free Cache went from ~10 GB to ~7 GB, so I presume that PrimoCache is doing something clever and not wasting the duplicated bits, but I would appreciate some confirmation that I am configuring the software properly in this instance. Thank you!

PrimoCache can correctly handle software RAID whether you choose one or both halves of the raid. It works based on the volume level, and no duplicate reads or writes will be done on the underlying disks.
