So with compact mode disabled, the allocation will stay at full-memory when you right-click and select properties and will never release the unused memory allocation? Yes.
On windows vista/7, when you do operations "right-click and select properties", Windows will scan (read/write) the data accross the whole disk. These read/write requests trigger memory allocations.
