PF Usage larger than pagefile.sys?

Post by gthomas »

VSuite Ramdisk allowed me to recover 764MB of ram. <kool!>

With XP Pro x86 and 4GB of ram, I set up a 764MB SCSI NTFS Ramdisk (Z:\) using OS invisible memory.
I then set the pagefile to Z:\ with Initial size = 704MB - Max size = 704MB.

When looking at Task Manager/Performance tab the "PF Usage" is appox 1.07GB, how is this possible?
(There is only one pagefile.sys, and it is on the ram drive.)

On another note, not sure if this is the best use of the OS invisible memory.

I had originally used the ramdrive for the IE8 temp, %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp, %SystemRoot%\TEMP files.

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

hi...

First it's faster if you use "direct" ramdisk and not "scsi"

in second be sure that there is not an other pagefile.sys 4 example under c: partition check the stuff under system properties where you set the pagefile to Z: (check other partition)

...

i'am not sure but windows could swap directly to the ram if there is no other place to swap to (swap = page/paging/pagefile) cause of it's manner to work
example 1 : if you disable completely the pagefile you will always see something on "PF Usage" but it's on ram and not on hdd
example 2 : in your case where PF Usage is at 1.07 at that moment if you assign C: 500 MB pagefile you will see 500 MB free from the used ram (proof of what i explained)
...

Hi,

PF Usage reported in task manager in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 is actually the system Commit Charge. It doesn't mean paging file only.

The term "Commit Charge" in Task Manager is to describe the pagefile-backed virtual address space. Roughly speaking, the maximum of the commit charge ("Limit Commit Charge" in Task Manager) equals the total physical memory (OS managed) plus the total pagefile size.
