I have a windows server running SAN software. There are 3 large volumes F: G: H: and I have 52 gig of ram to use for L1 read only cache

Should I make 1 large cache of all 52 gig ram and add all three volumes to it, or should I break it up and use 33% of the memory (x 3) and create a Cache and only add 1 drive to it? and then do it for the other 2 drives as well?

Sorry for the delay in replying - unless you have particular reason to favour or disregard specific volumes, a single larger cache would likely be more effective.

Reasons to exclude a volume from caching could include:

• it holds rarely accessed data (for example, backup/archival copies);
• it holds continuously changing data (so cached copies would be outdated quickly);
• it contains data that doesn't benefit from increased speed, e.g. videos or sound recordings where only having enough performance for playback matters - currently the highest speed needed would be around 90MB/s for UltraHD 4K (HEVC level 6.2, High tier) so faster access would be superfluous for playback.
