Request for P.Memory Exceeds the Amount Currently Available

Post by pdpax »

Hi, I want to set up a drive with a size of 5GB and I set the disk size as 5000 MB, but on Substance Settings, when I click next, I get the error "Your request for physical memory exceeds the amount currently available!"

My ram is 4GB and at the bottom of the screen, it says there is 3950 MB OS managed memory. I can set drives for 2.5GB or so, but not more than that. I saw in a picture on the FAQ that drives can be as big as 90GB while having 3000MB OS managed memory. I don't get it! What should I do?

Welcome to the forums Pdpax,

Ramdisks require memory equal to their size - so you need 5GB RAM for a 5GB ramdisk. You may be confusing lower memory usage with the Dynamic Memory Management (DMM) feature, which allocates memory as the ramdisk is used, rather than tying it all up at once. Even with DMM, a full ramdisk will still require RAM to match its capacity which is why you aren't able to create a 5GB ramdisk (with 3950MB, 2GB or less would be more sensible).

You may be able to get more mileage from a smaller ramdisk by enabling NTFS compression on it (which would allow more data to fit on but with a CPU performance penalty).

I have the same problem:
1. OS: WinXP xp sp3
2. RAM: 8G
3. System shows 3.5G Ram (3582M)
4. Use VSuite_Ramdisk_Free_32bit_1.18.1531.1240
I can assign max ramdisk of 4G
5. use Primo.Ramdisk v6.5.0
More space: 4540MB of OS invisible Memory
I can only assign less than 2560MB as RamDisk
Error Message:
You request for physical memory exceeds the amount currently available.

Welcome to the forums Joshua,

It looks like your ramdisk is currently configured to use main memory only.

After specifying the size of the ramdisk, you should have a second configuration page which contains a checkbox (under Physical Memory Settings) labeled "Use Invisible Memory" - this needs to be selected. Please check whether you have done this.

Hi Eric,
Yes. I did check the option "Use Invisible Memory"
That is why I got 4.5G available and able to assign 2.5G as ramdisk.

Please check attached file.

Joshua,

The attachment makes it clear that you are not using any invisible memory (free=total) and that your ramdisk is instead using "standard" (managed) memory - see attachment below for the type of figures to expect from an IM ramdisk. You clearly have PAE/DEP set up (required for IM to be available) so that only leaves the specific ramdisk configuration you have created as the cause of your problem.

Please double-check the "Use Invisible Memory" setting and, if you are certain it is correct, save and upload the .vdd file created using the option "Export the disc settings...".

(PS Name's not Eric).

@Joshua, Click the "Go to Advanced Mode" then you will see "Components Settings" button. Click it and then check the option "Use Invisible Memory" in the pop-up dialog.
