Pressing pause then run possible problem

I have been using PrimoCache for some time now, and the registered version since it was formally released, but had never used the pause function until yesterday.
I have a cache on my system disk, (5gb ram, 20gb SSD), and the same on my data drive, all worked fine for many months.
I was about to take my backup, (twice per week), and suddenly thought maybe I should pause the cache, no idea why this popped into my head. I paused both cache, took the backup and clicked the run button, all seemed fine.
When I came to power down some hours later, it hung with "shutdown" on the screen, the arrow circling as usual, but after 15 minutes or so, it stayed like that, so eventually I pressed the PC power button for a few seconds to force it down. This morning I powered on, and I noticed it was running slower, and checked PrimoCache and found it had reset, drives still cached as setup, but most of the SSD was unused, and of course the hit indicator low, as you would expect if you had just started the cache off.
I did nothing special on the PC prior to this, no updates or fresh installs, though it could have been a glitch. Clearly forcing the PC off may well have caused the problem, but I have had no previous problems with shutdown hanging.
Is there a need to pause the cache during a full or differential backup? I use Shadow protect desktop, and the OS is windows 8.1.
Any advice or comments gratefully received.
