Unable to use RAM disk for pagefile Windows 7

Post by bebopson »

Hi, I have tried several configurations of the virtual memory in Windows 7 Pro and tweaked a few settings to get the OS to use my Ram drive (P: for pagefile) to be used for the pagefile. I've turned off hibernation, set Windows to clear the pagefile at shutdown, set Windows not to create a dump file. But regardless of what I do, it will not create a pagefile on the Ram disk.
I've tried no pagefile on C:, sytem-managed, custom size (200MB min/max & 350MB min/max). When I turn off pagefile on C:, Windows complains that there is something wrong with my pagefile configuration and creates one anyways. When I set it to 200MB it also complains and creates one. It seems to me that there is some kind of issue at startup that prevents Windows from using the P: Ram drive. The existing pagefile.sys on C: seems to be stuck at about 312MB. Any idea what's going on here? Is Windows failing to mount the drive in time to use it for the pagefile?

Here are the disk setting:
Basic settings:
Disk size: 4500 MB
Disk type: Direct-IO
Drive letter assigned: P
One-time disk: No

Substance settings:
Memory size: 4500 MB
Memory features: IM
Drive file size: 0 MB
Drive file name: -

File system settings:
File system: NTFS
Cluster size: Default
Volume label: VIRTUALMEM
NTFS compression: No
NTFS indexing: No
Create "TEMP" folder: No

File system advanced settings:
Custom folders: -
Volume serial number: -
Account "Everyone" permission: -

Image settings:
Enable image file: No

Let me know if there are any windows settings or log output you want.

There shall be no problems to set pagefile on a ramdisk. Are you sure that you have correctly set up pagefiles. Can you upload a screenshot of your pagefile settings (control panel - system - advanced settings - Advanced - Performance settings - advanced - virtual memory)

On my system (Win7prof-64bit) pagefile is running on Primo ramdisk 5.6.0 (driveletter X:) without any problems.

Can you try to put pagefile on a ramdisk without the image file associated?

Thanks.
