So I redid the testing (same settings, new test files), and it ran at slower speed first and then the faster speed:

I definitely will not be mixing drives. I'll stick to just my NVME SSDs as cache, and if I want more space, I'll get another of the same NVME SSD and install it with a PCie adaptor.
