Advise on SSD used. Looking at reducing the size of SSD.

Post by ongbenghui »

Hi,

I got a SSD of 128G installed as cache for Windows 10 OS HDD and other HDD. It is allocated in full at this moment. Swap is OS HDD.
This is my result after a week of usage.

Volume windows (C:)
2017-10-16 07:59:22
-------------------
Total Read 3.85GB
Cached Read 3.60GB (93.7%)
L2Storage Read 3.10GB (80.5%)
L2Storage Write 291.81MB
Total Write (Req) 605.16MB
Total Write (Done) 605.16MB (100.0%)
Urgent/Normal 0 / 0
Deferred Blocks 0 (0.0%)
Trimmed Blocks 0
Prefetch Inactive
Free Cache (L1/L2) 32.00MB / 59.54GB
Cache Hit Rate 93.75%

You can see, Free Cache L2 is 60GB. Meaning, the only 32G plus has been used.

Does it make sense to
1) Reduce the SSD to a smaller 64G or 32G mSATA SSD ?
2) Configure just 32G for cache and use the rest for other purpose.

Any advise.

For me when using a machine just for normal computing, I found that 16GB cache get filled it to the max. 32GB seem to be the sweet spot. 128 and up above if you play games or have many small - midsize files like raw pictures that you edit (touch up) quite often. Large files tend not to get cache very often.

Anyway, some of the guys here may have way more experience when it come to specific setup that are optimal

If it is possible and easy, you may split the SSD into 2 partitions and install Windows OS on one of these partitions. The speed of accessing native SSD is faster than that of SSD cache. You may use the other partition as SSD cache to speed up your HDDs.
