Free Cache (L2) seems too small?

Post by EmeraldMonkeyPaw »

With the following config https://ibb.co/tHd9Pwv

I would have thought that "Free Cache (L2)" should be reporting roughly 470GB. However, it's reporting 23.25GB. This doesn't seem to change even if I click the "flush deferred write data to disk" open and wait for that to complete.

Have I done something wrong?

Welcome to the forums EmeraldMonkeyPaw,

You should only expect to see the full amount reported as free at the very start of caching. Having only a small amount left means that your cache is being properly utilised - try Stopping the cache task to see what effect that has on performance. Deleting/recreating the cache will clear your L2 storage volume but this is not necessary - when the free amount gets to near zero, PrimoCache will clear out the oldest cached data to make way for anything new.

The "flush deferred write" command simply writes modified data from the SSD used for L2 to the underlying HDD (PrimoCache will do this normally in the background). It doesn't clear space on the SSD because that data may be read again, so removing it would reduce performance.

Hope that clarifies matters - a full guide to PrimoCache can be found here.
