Benefits L2 Cache for nvme with L2 SATA?

Post by rcamarda390 »

I have 2 NVME M.2 drives I use for storage and one Samsung Evo 860 I use for L2 and several spinning HHDs.
I am tuning the use of L1 cache and L2 cache from my M.2, SSDs and HDDs.
Clearly it would help with HHDs.
L1 will help with M.2, but I am wondering if I should have L2 cache enabled for my M.2 drives?
(If I had a fast gen 4 NVME M.2 as L2, this would be a different conversation)
the SATA is way slower than the NVME, so I would think L2 SATA would be a bottle neck for L2 cache flushing to M.2.
On the other hand, would the L2 take brunt of Trimmed blocks, so the final output to M.2 would less likely to have temporary data and increase drives longevity by sacrificing L2 longevity?

No need to set L2 for M.2 SSDs. Using a sata SSD as L2 for M.2 SSDs will slow down the access. It' not worth to extend the longevity by sacrificing the performance. Besides, L1 with Defer-write can also help to reduce the wear on SSDs.
