[Beta 6.0.0] Compact Mode won't stay enabled [Resolved]

Post by Jaga »

Recently migrated my RAMdisk needs to Primo Ramdisk Pro - thanks for continuing with a great piece of software.

Found what I think is a bug in the Beta. I created a 24576 MB RAMdrive, Direct-IO, Backed by Image, Compressed (Ultra), Normal Load, Save at Shutdown, NTFS, 4k Cluster, Disabled Indexing, Type: RAM-Disk.

I enabled DMM and Compact Mode when creating it (which worked initially), but after rebooting the configuration automatically turns off Compact Mode, and will not allow me to re-enable it. Every time I apply the setting (and it confirms it saved it), I re-enter the config and find the checkmark for Compact Mode turned off again.

I suspect it may be related to the size of the RAMdrive, or the volume cluster size, but wanted to report it in case that behavior wasn't desired. I'd really like to keep a large RAMdisk available for the system, as it has 64gig of RAM and could take full advantage of it.

This is because of the backing image format. When loading an image other than the "Compact Image" format will override the Compact Mode. Only the format "Compact Image" supports the compact mode.

Got it, thanks. I'll play around more with different settings and see what I come up with.

Just a quick follow-up on this feature that I noticed while playing with it...

As you said - only a Compact Image will let us enable the Compact Mode on a RAMDisk. There's no way to compress a Compact Image that I can see - which I would *very* much like to do. I use a larger RAMdisk (24 gig), and the reason I switched to Primo RAMdisk was because of the compression feature. I have a nice SSD that I'd like to reduce writes on, and I'm not sure if Primo RAMdisk works with ReFS formats in Storage Space volumes (which is the only other drive I have available to store an image on - and it's horribly slow).

However the compressed mode to free up memory is nice too. I would be really nice if both could be used together to make a "compressed compact disk" that uses as little disk space as possible, and only as much memory as needed. Right now I find myself having to either use a smaller RAMdrive and Compact mode, or a larger non-compact with Compression.

I'm sorry that so far we don't have such feature to meet both "compressed image" and "dynamic memory" at the same time.

No worries, perhaps in a future build. :)

Yes, we'll think about it. It is possible but needs lot of work. Thanks!
