Fancycache for systems with a modest amount of RAM

Post by mc6809e »

I was hoping to run FancyCache to improve the performance of an old laptop that has a mere 512MB of RAM. I've entered 128MB as the size of the cache, but FancyCache reports that there isn't enough physical RAM, even though more than 256MB is free. Is there any chance we'll see a version of FancyCache that will run on such a small system? I realize cache must consume some RAM, but even a small cache on such a system would be still be useful given FancyCache's replacement policies, which are superior to Windows.

No doubt that it's a useful machine but with that little ram you are seriously limited running modern OSs and software.

You really need extra RAM for a program like fancycache to do it's thing.

It works with Windows, it doesn't replace the windows caching mechanisms.

Have you ever considered installing Linux? IMO thats the best chance that you will have of making that old laptop feel snappier.
I'd recommend Xubuntu Linux, http://www.Xubuntu.org or Arch Linux https://www.archlinux.org/ - They are fairly user friendly if you are willing to learn.
