Defragmenting's impact on caching

Post by Vano »

Do defragmenters have any adverse impact on PrimoCache - e.g. invalidate cache contents? I'm primarily concerned about L2.

Monitoring the stats during defragmentation, I do see that the cached data appear to be invalidated: the amount of L2 cached data drops dramatically.

Yes. PrimoCache is a block-level caching program and most defragment software also work in the block level. When they do the defragment work, they move data blocks by changing the location in the disk. Such operations will make PrimoCache to invalidate stored cache contents.
